  1. India celebrated its 77th Independence Day on 15 August, 2023. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Nation First, Always First” which is in line with the government’s focus on national unity and development.
  2. Partition Horrors Remembrance Day or Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas is annually observed across India on 14 August to remember the victims of the 1947 violence that accompanied the country’s partition and to remember the sacrifices during the partition of India and Pakistan.
  3. On 12 August 2023, the ‘Union Home Minister’s Medal for Excellence in Investigation, 2023’ has been awarded to 140 Police Personnel, in recognition of their outstanding service in the investigation.
  4. The 132nd edition of the Durand Cup, an annual football competition, was inaugurated in Kokrajhar, Assam on 5 August, 2023 by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
  5. Aditi Swami created history by becoming the first-ever Indian to clinch the individual World Title at the World Archery Championships final in Berlin.
  6. The latest edition of Malabar exercise is being held in the Australian waters from 11-21 August, 2023 with the participation of the United States, Japan, India and Australia. Australia is hosting this mega event for the first time.
  7. The first WHO Traditional Medicine Global Summit is set to unfold on 17 and 18 August 2023, in the city of Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
  8. Travel company MakeMyTrip has announced a collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism to introduce over 600 unique and unconventional travel destinations. The company has introduced a specialized microsite named ‘Traveller’s Map of India’ to facilitate this initiative.
  9. In a significant move aimed at embracing its cultural and linguistic heritage, the Kerala Legislative Assembly has passed a resolution requesting the Central Government to change the name of the state from ‘Kerala’ to ‘Keralam’.
  10. K Taraka Rama Rao, Cabinet Minister for Information Technology, Electronics & Communications (IT, E&C), Telangana, launched India’s first Agricultural Data Exchange (ADeX) and Agriculture Data Management Framework (ADMF) in Hyderabad, Telangana.
  11. Ministry of Tourism identifies ‘Prayagraj’ and ‘Naimisharanya’ in Uttar Pradesh as destinations for development under ‘Swadesh Darshan 2.0 (SD2.0)’ with the objective to develop sustainable and responsible tourism destinations.

In a significant stride towards showcasing the rich heritage of Indian craftsmanship and fostering self-reliance, the One District One Product (ODOP) program has joined hands with the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) to launch the captivating and innovative ‘ODOP Wall’.
  13. The Himachal Pradesh State Handicraft and Handloom Corporation Limited will be renamed as ‘Himcraft Corporation’.
  14. The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has given the green light to the merger between India’s prominent entertainment company, Zee Entertainment Enterprises, and Culver Max Entertainment (formerly known as Sony Pictures Networks India or SPNI).
  15. The Uttar Pradesh Government and Mexican state Nuevo Leon signed a Memorandum of Understanding for investment in tourism, infrastructure, pharma and medical sectors in Uttar Pradesh.
  16. National award-winning art director and production designer Nitin Chandrakant Desai passed away on 2 August 2023, at the age of 57.
